BIO DRAFT

For over 30 years, Tumia Romero has been a relentless voice in the community.  Romero has a solid strategic history, working with the Office of Congressman Danny K. Davis,  and was Davis’ campaign press secretary as he ran for Congress.

Romero was appointed as a member of Governor Pat Quinn’s cabinet as the Assistant Director of Labor and was appointed to the Unemployment Board of Appeal.  As an Adjunct Professor, Romero teaches public policy, public administration, and leadership at National Louis University.

A lifelong Chicagoan, Romero graduated from public schools, attended the University of Chicago’s Pilot Enrichment Project, and received a B.A., Organizational Communications from Loyola University Chicago. Always the innovator, Romero received an M.A.O.M. in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix and is currently a Ph.D. student in Public Policy at the Union Institute and University.

Romero is a staunch public policy advocate and works on a broad range of issues.  Romero’s responsibilities include oversight and management, press, public, and media relations. She helped write and organize local and national constituency groups to pass the historic and landmark Second Chance Act of 2007. Romero also advises other congressional offices on housing and criminal justice issues.

Romero did not allow a teenage pregnancy to hold her back. Before joining Congressman Davis, she worked for the City of Chicago's Mayoral Press Office, for three mayors, from Mayors Harold Washington, and Eugene Sawyer, to Mayor Richard M. Daley. She was called by reporters and opinion-makers, the "gatekeeper" and was always on hand to manage crisis relations.

Always interested in politics and using the political process to improve people’s quality of life, Romero has worked in many political campaigns. She has consulted with Clear Channel’s WGCI-FM and V103-FM, NEED, CATCH, Chicago Westside NAACP,  and other private entities.

Romero has volunteered for over three decades.  As a teen, she worked with the 48th Ward Progressive Network and Mayor Harold Washington’s Political Education Project (PEP).  She went on to work with the 7th Congressional Districts PAC and the 29th Ward Peoples’ Assembly. She was a Local School Council (LSC) Board Member for several Chicago Public Schools and on the Advisory Board for the Fannie Mae Illinois Partnership Office. She has worked as an advisor to many organizations over the years, including volunteering with NEED and CATCH.  Romero continues her community work as a member of the Chicago Westside Branch NAACP, Chicago Coalition Against Police Brutality, and as the Chairman of Public Relations for IVI-IPO.
